Legendary football coach Bill Belichick has built a Hall of Fame resume on wins and championships in his storied and tenured career. What he witnessed on the sideline Sunday during a loss in Las Vegas was beyond bizarre. It was unthinkable and unbelievable.

Unmistakable, some might say. Not Belichick, though.

"It was a mistake," Belichick said during his postgame press conference following New England's 30-24 loss at Las Vegas on the game's final play.

To set it up, here's what happened.

The game was tied at 24-24 after the Las Vegas Raiders scored a touchdown and booted the extra point with 32 seconds remaining in regulation. The Patriots had the ball at their own 45-yard line with three seconds remaining for one last play. Instead of kneeling on the ball and opting for overtime, the Patriots ran a draw play.

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones took the snap out of the shotgun position and handed the ball to running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who raced about 23 yards downfield before turning around to lateral it to Jakobi Meyers.

Meyers retreated and ran toward the other end zone before attempting a long, backwards lateral to Jones. The heave was intercepted by Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones, who caught it cleanly and rumbled unscathed 48 yards for a game-winning touchdown.

"What a wild finish," the Fox announcer screamed. "Chandler Jones, the ex-New England Patriot, on a lateral back, comes up with it and goes the distance at the horn in one of the wildest finishes you'll ever hear."

The color commentary guy had one word to describe what just happened.

"Unbelievable."

Meyers said he was simply trying to make a play for his team.

"Just trying to do too much, trying to be a hero, I guess," Meyers said after the game. "I thought I saw Mac open. I didn't see Chandler Jones at the time. I thought [Mac] was open and tried to get it to him and let him try to make a play with it. But the score was tied, so I should have went down."

Renowned sports commentator Jim Rome said he couldn't stop watching the replay and said it got funnier each time he saw it.

"I cannot stop watching and re-watching the final play of the Patriots-Raiders. I can't stop laughing. The more you watch it, the funnier it gets," Rome tweeted.

Here are a few more of the hilarious tweets and comments dogging the Patriots after their last-second gaffe to lose.
