Peacemaker has wowed fans since its release in January, becoming one of the world's biggest shows and all but ensuring it would be renewed for a second season.

Speaking to Newsweek prior to the show's release, show creator James Gunn said he and the cast were keen to make more of the DC series.

"We're definitely interested, we definitely want to do it. You know, it's just HBO Max will have to pull that trigger," Gunn told Newsweek.

Luckily, the streaming platform confirmed ahead of the show's finale, which aired on Thursday, February 17, that the show had indeed been renewed for Season 2.

Gunn, who also directed The Suicide Squad, explained to Newsweek at the time that while he and the cast would "definitely love" to make a second season of Peacemaker there were other projects in the pipeline as well.

Teasing these future projects, the director added: "We're working on some other things too, within the same sort of universe that are not TV shows but other things."

News of the DC show's renewal was confirmed on Wednesday, February 16 by HBO Max, and the streaming platform announced that Gunn would direct and write all episodes for Season 2.

Peacemaker had eight episodes in its first season but it was not confirmed whether it would have the same amount of episodes for Season 2.

In a press statement, Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max said of the renewal: "The brilliance of James Gunn once again shines with Peacemaker.

"He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that's simultaneously thrilling, hilarious and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world.

"As the first original DC show to have its series premiere on HBO Max, we are thrilled that the viewers agreed to give peace a f***ing chance."

Gunn added in the statement: "Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max.

"To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can't wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!"

John Cena, who portrays the show's eponymous supervillain, added: "I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character. Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series."

All episodes of Peacemaker Season 1 are available to stream on HBO Max now.
