'Persuasion' Cast: Who Plays Who in the Netflix Jane Austen Adaptation

Persuasion is getting the Bridgerton treatment—well, kind of.

Jane Austen's classic book of love lost and recovered has been given a modern makeover for Netflix, with a diverse A-list cast at its helm.

Here is everything you need to know about the cast and who they're portraying in the new period drama, which is directed by Carrie Cracknell.

Persuasion follows Anne Elliot, a young woman who was persuaded in her youth to call off her romance with a penniless sailor named Wentworth.

Years later Anne learns that Wentworth is now a captain in the Navy, and she wonders whether she can seize her second chance at finding love.

Dakota Johnson takes on the lead role of Anne, a quick-witted narrator who often breaks the fourth wall to speak directly to the audience about her relationship woes.

The 50 Shades of Grey star is transported to 1800s England in the film, but with many modern references and sayings all mixed in.

Johnson stars opposite Cosmo Jarvis, who takes on the role of Captain Wentworth. The actor first came to prominence in Lady Macbeth, he has since appeared in shows like Raised by Wolves, and he is currently filming FX drama Shogun.

Wentworth isn't the only one vying for Anne's affections as there is also her cousin Mr Elliot, who is portrayed by Henry Golding.

Golding rose to fame after taking a lead role in Crazy Rich Asians, and he has since appeared in films like The Gentleman, Last Christmas, and Snake Eyes

Despite Anne's level-headedness, her family can only be described vacuous, money-obsessed nobles who leave all the hard work to everyone else.

There's Anne's narcissistic father, Sir Walter Elliot, her entitled sister Elizabeth, and her hypochondriac sibling Mary.

Sir Walter is played by none other than Richard E. Grant, whose portraits are seen all over the Elliot family home and in their second residence in Bath, while Yolanda Kettle plays Elizabeth and Mia McKenna-Bruce portrays Mary.

Other notable characters in Anne and Wentworth's tale include Mary's husband Charles, played by Ben Bailey-Smith, and her sisters-in-law Louisa (Nia Towle), who takes a shine to Wentworth, and Henrietta (Izuka Hoyle).

Lydia Rose Bewley takes on the role of Sir Walter's love interest, Penelope Clay, while Nikki Amuka-Bird stars as family friend Lady Russell, who was the one to persuade Anne to give up on her romance with Wentworth.

Persuasion is released on Netflix on Friday, July 15.
