Several venues, such as many government offices and some private businesses, are closed on federal holidays, such as New Year's Day, while others remain open.

Some facilities may also be offering modified services and operating on a reduced schedule amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

But what about the Post Office and other mail services? Here we look at the New Year's Day hours and delivery information for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and courier services.

Post Office Hours on New Year's Day 2022

Most USPS services are closed on New Year's Day, apart from Priority Mail Express, which will be delivered on January 1. However, the USPS website explains: "New Year's Day deliveries are made only in limited locations. An extra fee for those deliveries will be assessed."

All Post Office locations are shut and regular mail will not be delivered on New Year's Day. No mail will be picked up from USPS Blue Collection Boxes on January 1.

But on January 3, all USPS locations will be reopened, while regular mail delivery services resume. Normal mail pick-up from USPS Blue Collection Boxes will also resume on January 3.

FedEx Hours on New Year's Day 2022

Most FedEx services are closed on January 1, except for the FedEx Custom Critical service, according to the FedEx website.

The following FedEx services are closed on New Year's Day:

  • FedEx Express
  • FedEx Ground
  • FedEx Home Delivery
  • FedEx Ground Economy
  • FedEx Office
  • FedEx Freight
  • FedEx Trade Networks

The FedEx website notes: "Customs clearance at U.S.-Canada land-border crossings is available 24 hours a day, every day, via FedEx Trade Networks, subject to the availability of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

"Check with your FedEx Trade Networks representative regarding the availability of customs clearance at U.S.-Mexico land-border crossings," it adds.

Several FedEx services, including Express, Ground, Ground Economy and Freight, will also not be running on January 2.

FedEx Home Delivery will be operating a modified service on January 2, with deliveries only in "Sunday-eligible stations."

The FedEx Office service will be also available on a modified schedule on the day after New Year's.

FedEx Office locations will open by 7 a.m. local time or at their regular time. Customers are advised to contact their local FedEx Office location for more information.

UPS Hours on New Year's Day 2022

There is no UPS pick-up or delivery service on New Year's Day. However, the UPS Express Critical service is available on January 1. Customers are advised to call 1-800-714-8779 or see upsexpresscritical.com for more information, according to the UPS website.

Normal UPS pick-up and delivery services return on January 3.
