Prince Harry Says 'They Were Happy To Lie' for Prince William in New Clip

Prince Harry has described how he received different treatment to that of Prince William in the U.K. as part of a newly released trailer for the second part of the royal's hit Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan.

Speaking about his time in Britain with Meghan, Harry tells viewers: "I wonder what would have happened to us if we hadn't got out when we did...I said we need to get out of here." The royal then describes the flight he is self-filming footage on as the "freedom flight."

One of the most incendiary parts of the trailer comes as clips of negative press coverage of Harry and Meghan are shown before a focused photograph of Buckingham Palace appears on screen, with Harry delivering the line: "They were happy to lie to protect my brother but were never willing to tell the truth to protect us."

What lies the prince could be referring to are not explored in the trailer.

There is a discrepancy in the subtitling of the trailer on Netflix's YouTube and platform page which has been pointed out online.

The YouTube subtitles read: "They were happy to lie to protect my brother." The Netflix platform subtitles read: "The British media are happy to lie to protect my brother."

Despite this, Harry is clearly heard to say "they" in the audio and the YouTube version is still publicly visible.

Newsweek approached Netflix for clarification.

This is not the first time that such claims have been made by the Sussexes.

Both Harry and Meghan have spoken about their treatment from both the press and the royal household during their life in the U.K, most notably with Oprah Winfrey in their landmark 2021 tell-all interview.

During a discussion with Winfrey about the royal household and the "Firm's" failure to contradict false reporting in the media about herself or Harry during their time as working royals, Meghan said: "I came to understand that not only was I not being protected, but they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family but they weren't willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband."

The royal couple's relationship with the U.K. media is famously strained. In the first installment of the Netflix series, the focus on Meghan's race in both traditional and social media was discussed at length by the couple and outside commentators.

When explaining how members of the royal family and royal household reacted to Meghan's treatment by the press at the beginning of her relationship with Harry, the prince said:

"What people need to understand is that as far as a lot of my family were concerned, everything that she was being put through, they had been put through as well.

"So it was almost like a rite of passage, and some of the members of the family [were] like 'right, but my wife had to go through that, so why should your girlfriend be treated any differently? Why should you get special treatment? Why should she get protected?'"

The key difference, Harry maintained was "the race element."

Harry's relationship with his older brother William has been the focus of much media speculation with Harry appearing to confirm that a distancing had occurred in 2019, when he told an interviewer that they were on "different paths."

Harry developed on this with Winfrey in 2021, saying: "As I've said before, I love William to bits. He's my brother. We've been through hell together. I mean, we have a shared experience. But...we're on different paths."

He added that the relationship was "space at the moment. And, you know, time heals all things, hopefully."

After Harry and Meghan stepped down from their royal roles in 2020 and moved to the U.S. they were not photographed together with William and Kate Middleton until September 2022, when they jointly viewed floral tributes left to the late-Queen Elizabeth II.

The first three episodes of Harry & Meghan were released on Thursday. The final three installments will stream globally from December 15.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
