Prince William and Kate Middleton together with Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall have taken to social media on Tuesday to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II on International Women's Day.

It is unusual for the royals to celebrate the Queen in this way as International Women's Day is typically used to shine a spotlight on underappreciated figures.

However, these posts have been made in special recognition of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee milestone this year, marking 70 years since she came to the throne.

The joint post on Instagram by the official dukeandduchessofcambridge and clarencehouse accounts reads: "In this very special #platinumjubilee year, we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen and her historic 70 years of service. #IWD2022.

"Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and Head of State, The Queen's extraordinary reign has been longer than any other monarch in British history—inspiring a nation and dedicating her life to the service of the Commonwealth and its people."

The royal couples also posted this message on Twitter with additional photographs illustrating the Queen's historic reign.

Kate and William have also made a series of posts celebrating inspirational women they have met over the course of their engagements in the last year.

Among those listed include Amelia Collins-Patel, the youngest woman to receive an MBE for her charitable work during the Covid-19 lockdowns and also tennis star Emma Raducanu.

The recognition for the Queen comes as part of the celebrations for her platinum jubilee year, to be marked officially with events over the summer including a special Trooping of the Colour ceremony, and Platinum Party at the Palace in the grounds of Buckingham Palace.

This comes in a year which the royals have been rocked by the announcement that the Queen tested positive for Covid-19 in February despite being triple jabbed.

Earlier this week, in her first face-to-face engagement since the diagnosis, the British monarch, 95, met with Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau who announced in a Downing Street press conference that: "I can tell you that in my conversation with her this morning she was as insightful and perspicacious as ever, very interested in what is going on, asked me all sorts of questions about Canada."

International Women's Day is a globally observed event which celebrates women's contributions to the social, cultural, political and economic fabric of modern society.

In 2021, Meghan Markle honored the day with a specially written letter to the Robert Clack School in Dagenham, London which she had visited to celebrate International Women's Day in 2020.

In the letter she wrote: "This International Women's Day, in collaboration with the work of our non-profit organisation, Archewell Foundation, we are encouraging everybody to participate in real acts of compassion for the women in their lives and their community. One suggestion we have is to take a moment to learn about the trailblazing women who came before us."
