Jimmy Kimmel has apologized to Quinta Brunson for stealing her Emmy Awards moment with his "dumb comedy bit."
Kimmel was attacked after Monday's awards ceremony when he continued a joke and pretended to be passed out in front of Brunson, who was collecting the award for outstanding writing for a comedy series for her show Abbott Elementary.
People on social media criticized Kimmel for his actions, with claims of racism made against him for the joke.

George M. Johnson, author of All Boys Aren't Blue, wrote on Twitter this wasn't the first time the talk-show host had been part of race controversy at an awards show. "Jimmy Kimmel was also part of the stolen moment from Moonlight winning the Oscar..."
Brunson, 32, was the first guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night, where they addressed the incident during the monologue and again during their interview.
Brunson first interrupted Kimmel's monologue. "You know how when you win an Emmy, you only have 45 seconds to do an acceptance speech, which is like not that much time," Brunson said. "Yeah, and then you get less time because someone does a dumb comedy bit that goes on a bit too long?"
"I have heard of that happening," Kimmel, 54, said. Brunson then gave the acceptance speech she wanted to at the Emmys, while the talk-show host stood quietly behind her.
Later on in the show, Brunson came out as a guest, and the pair tackled the incident head on once again. There were no jokes this time as Kimmel apologized for what he did.
"Now, that was a dumb comedy bit that we thought would be funny," Kimmel said. "People got upset. They said I stole your moment, and maybe I did, and I'm very sorry if I did do that. I'm sorry I did do that, actually.
"And also, the last thing I would ever want to do is upset you because I think so much of you. I think you know that. I hope you know that," Kimmel said.
Brunson thanked Kimmel for his words, and explained that she wasn't offended at the awards, as she was too preoccupied with having a good time.
"If Quinta is happy, I'm happy. But I'm glad that Jimmy apologized, because he needed to and Quinta deserved it," wrote @Andi3000AD on Twitter, after Kimmel's apology had aired on his talk show.
However, not everyone was pleased with the quality of Kimmel's wording in his apology. "It's giving... 'I'm sorry if you feel that way,'" @kayleedlewis commented on Twitter.
@angekuo called Kimmel's joke at the Emmys a "terrible bit" but praised Brunson for her response. "But honestly just makes her look even better with how gracious she's being over this," the Twitter user wrote.
@Brandon59582475 was also unimpressed with Kimmel's response, calling it worse than Will Smith's apology video after his Chris Rock slap. He wrote that Kimmel took "absolutely took NO ownership."
Newsweek has contacted Kimmel's team for further comment.
