Who is Rachel Minaya? Wife of Yankees Exec Found Dead

Rachel Minaya, the wife of New York Yankees executive Omar Minaya, was found dead in their New Jersey home on Saturday, the New York Post reported Sunday.

A person briefed by the family reportedly told the outlet that suicide has been ruled out as a cause of death. Rachel Minaya was 55.

Omar Minaya, 65, reportedly was not home at the time of his wife's death.

The Yankees held a moment of silence before Tuesday's game to mourn the loss of Rachel.

"We send our deepest condolences to Rachel's family and friends during this time," the team added in a post on X.

Who Was Rachel Minaya?

According to her LinkedIn profile, Rachel Minaya was the president of RMS Interior Design from April 2012 to December 2018. That is the only job listed on her profile.

Rachel Minaya was also a mother to her sons Justin and Teddy, whom she shares with Omar. Justin Minaya is an NBA forward and has appeared on both the Portland Trail Blazers and their G-League affiliate during the 2023-24 season.

A LinkedIn profile for a man named Teddy Minaya states he is an Operational Specialist at Apple in New York. His bio states he is currently "enrolled at the BrainStation boot camp in New York City to further develop my skills and elevate my career as a software engineer."

Omar and Rachel Minaya – whose maiden name is Albright – met at a "unisex" hair salon in Manhattan in 1989 where he asked for her phone number, according to a 2007 Sports Illustrated article. The profile described Rachel as "long, lithe and olive-skinned. Part Irish, part African: O's kind of cocktail."

Within a year, they got engaged during a trip to Italy, meaning they would have been married around 35 years at the time of Rachel's death.

Who is Omar Minaya?

Omar Minaya has been a senior advisor to Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman since 2023.

The Dominican Republic native became the MLB's first Hispanic general manager when he took the position with the New York Mets in 2004.

Some of his most notable accomplishments include helping discover Sammy Sosa and Ivan Rodriguez while scouting for the Rangers, ESPN reported in 2023.
Omar previously worked as an executive for the Montreal Expos and as a scout for the Texas Rangers.

The 2007 Sports Illustrated profile said the couple were raising Teddy in Texas at the time, but Rachel Minaya "was a Jersey girl, so it was bliss for them both that day in 1997 when O was shown to his new office, in the stadium he'd once stolen into, as the assistant general manager of the New York Mets."
