It isn't uncommon for partners to have disagreements. But one Redditor wrote that their wife is angry with them following a dispute at a family gathering.

In their post on the Subreddit "Am I the A**hole," which amassed 13,000 votes and more than 1,000 comments, the Redditor sdgkoufcnkk wrote that their wife of eight years does not work and is a stay-at-home mother.

At the family get-together, sdgkoufcnkk's wife said they needed to leave early because the couple's children had a number of things to do the following day. However, the children wanted to stay longer.

"My mom asked my wife if they can miss one day of practice to spend time with family since the kids also must have missed their cousins after not having met them for nearly a year," sdgkoufcnkk wrote. "My wife retaliated saying an illiterate woman wouldn't know the importance of education and extracurricular activities."

The Redditor explained in their post that their mother dropped out of school at a young age after losing her parents to support her siblings.

"She had the choice to either go to school herself or send her siblings to school," sdgkoufcnkk said.

When her siblings got jobs, they helped support her until she got married. After her husband (sdgkoufcnkk's father) died, she began working two jobs and received some money from her siblings.

After their wife made her comment, sdgkoufcnkk wrote that their mother apologized for "overstepping." However, the Redditor was not happy with their wife and fired back.

"I told my wife that literacy clearly hasn't taught her (my wife) basic manners," they wrote.

That response angered the wife, who went back home with the couple's children. sdgkoufcnkk wrote that the wife is not answering calls or texts. They explained they might have been wrong for not siding with their wife and "insulting" her.

But the vast majority of fellow Reddit users wrote that sdgkoufcnkk was not in the wrong.

"Your wife sounds awful and should show your mum all the respect in the world," one comment read. "As many people say on this site, this is a massive red flag, your wife clearly looks down on others and doesn't have respect for you, or your family."

Another pointed out that sdgkoufcnkk's wife made her own comment about her mother-in-law in front of the rest of the family.

"She [thought] it was okay to humiliate your mom in front of the people she'd dropped out of school to support, their spouses and kids, entirely unprovoked," they wrote. "Since your wife is giving you the silent treatment, you may want to give her time to cool off, then ask her why she thought that was an appropriate thing to say."

Other commenters agreed. While some raised the possibility of getting a divorce, some advised against it.

One wrote that by getting a divorce, sdgkoufcnkk's wife would likely get primary custody of their children. Another said that commenters should not make any suggestions to get a divorce without knowing the couple's full relationship history.

"Wife is [the a**hole] here and OP is NTA, but we don't know if this is a regular pattern of behavior or an isolated incident, we don't know if there's a history of conflict between wife and mom, etc.," a Reddit user wrote. "Wife owes mom a massive apology here, but if this is the only time she's acted like this, then it can be worked through."
