Resident Evil has spun off into multiple movies and animated series, but Netflix is now giving the survival horror video game the live-action TV treatment.
Netflix has given their Resident Evil live-action series a release date in July, with a plot that spans two different eras in a virus-infected New Raccoon City.
Ella Balinska and Siena Agudong lead the cast as two young women growing up in a city where an Umbrella Corporation mistake has deadly consequences. The Resident Evil trailer promises that the show will have all the zombie gore that franchise fans expect—yes, the characters do wield chainsaws to hack through the realms of undead.
Here's everything you need to know about the new Resident Evil before it comes out, including its release date, cast, trailer and plot.
When Does Resident Evil Come Out?

The Netflix release date for Resident Evil is Thursday, July 14. As with most Netflix series, the show will be released from 3 a.m. ET.
The first season of the show will have eight episodes, which will be released all at once on the service.
Who Is in the Cast of Resident Evil?
Ella Balinska and Siena Agudong are the show's leads, playing sisters Jade and Billie Wexler. Balinska's biggest role to date was one of Charlie's Angels in the 2019 reboot, while Agudong played the eponymous No Good Nick in the Netflix show of the same name and played a younger version of Jordana Brewster's character in Fast & Furious 9.
In the earlier timeline, Jade is played by Tamara Smart, star of A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting.
Joining them in the cast is Lance Reddick as their father Albert Wexler. The trailer shows that Albert is the one who learns that the Umbrella Corporation has infected New Raccoon City with the deadly T-virus. Reddick is perhaps best known for playing the hotel manager in the John Wick films, and has also starred in Bosch, White House Down and Godzilla vs. Kong.
Per the first-look images released by Netflix, Killing Eve star Turlough Convery also has a major role in the series, though the streamer has not revealed exactly what it is yet.
What Will Happen in Resident Evil?
The official Netflix plot synopsis reads: "Year 2036—14 years after the spread of Joy caused so much pain, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by the blood-thirsty infected and mind-shattering creatures. In this absolute carnage, Jade is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City, by her father's chilling connections to the sinister Umbrella Corporation but mostly by what happened to her sister, Billie."
The trailer revealed that this apocalyptic timeline will not be the only one the show will be focusing on. The show will also show Jade and Billie moving to Raccoon City in 2022, when Umbrella is merely a scandal-plagued company trying to resuscitate its image.
Will they succeed? Well seeing as they are the ones who cause a zombie outbreak that infects nearly everyone it touches, it seems unlikely.
Though Resident Evil has previously been spun into a franchise starring Milla Jovovich, the recent reboot Welcome to Raccoon City and recent Netflix animated show Infinite Darkness, this new Resident Evil does not share a continuity with any of them. Instead, it takes a new spin on the video game's many linked narratives.
