'Rick and Morty' Season 6 Finale Recap: A Christmas 'Star Wars' Crossover

Season 6 of Rick and Morty came to an end in spectacular fashion with a Star Wars-themed Christmas episode, but it effectively laid the groundwork for Season 7 next year.

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's interdimensional Adult Swim series closed Season 6 with the 10th episode "Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation," a Christmas parody.

A robotic Rick spoiled the Smith family, Morty journeyed to the center of the Earth and the president of the United States double-crossed Morty in order to geek out.

Here's everything that happened in the Season 6 finale of Rick and Morty.

Christmas time in 'Rick and Morty'

We know it's a special episode because the opening title sequence is ditched in favor of a Rick and Morty Christmas-themed opening. The family, still including Space Beth are all sitting around in the living room waiting to receive presents from a Rick who is still being "22 percent nicer" from the previous episode.

Heading to the multiverse, Rick "Santachez" gifts Jerry a version of Miracle on 34th Street that is two hours longer, Beth and Space Beth a picture of them together in a universe where she didn't die as a child, and Summer gets money because that's all any 17-year-old wants.

Morty receives the greatest gift, and the catalyst for the episode, a genuine lightsaber. It makes the noises and everything.

After playing with it in the garage, Morty accidentally drops it perfectly vertical, and it starts going through Rick's basement levels. They go all the way down to level 15, the sushi restaurant, but Morty takes them back up to level 10 to intercept the lightsaber.

On level 10, Morty finds the real Rick who's been spending his time trying to find the version of Rick who killed his family. The two nearly came face to face in Episode 1 of Season 6, but not much has been said about him since. The real Rick created the nicer robotic version of Rick to be nice to the family while he works.

As the episode develops, we establish that existence is pain for the robot Rick who'd love to reveal he's a robot, but rules relating to the Asimov Cascade prevent him from doing so. Instead, he sits with Jerry, Beth and Summer, and hopes that they figure it out.

The president (Keith David) returns to the Smith house to ask about the object hurtling towards the center of the Earth. Morty agrees to help retrieve it, though the real Rick is hesitant to do so. After finding out it's a lightsaber, the president mocks Morty and seems to rip into the Disneyfication of the Star Wars franchise.

Begrudgingly, Rick helps by creating an evil lightsaber to catch up to the good one, but the plan fails. They then create a two-man drill ship to get down and catch the lightsaber. Rick intends to take Morty, but they get into an argument about the events from "A Rick in King Mortur's Mort" when Morty called Rick boring.

After Rick storms off, it's left to Morty and the president to head down and grab the lightsaber in the nick of time. Once they return to the surface, it turns out the president drove a wedge between Morty and Rick on purpose so that he could keep the lightsaber for himself.

After playing with it in the oval office, he drops it perfectly vertical, and it once again starts heading to the center of the Earth. He warns Earth about its impending doom and takes the White House into space for safety.

The Smith family are enjoying more wholesome Christmas time together with the robot Rick, until Morty busts him. Feeling betrayed, the Smiths murder the robot, who welcomes the sweet embrace of death.

However, they switch him back on again and piece him back together in an effort to stop the lightsaber and confront the president in space.

Once inside the floating White House, Morty and a robotic Rick, who's looking more like C-3PO now, must fight the president's countless robots. These include robots with lightsabers for arms, and lightsabers for eyes, though problem is they can't see.

In badass style, Morty wins the showdown but blows a hole in the side of the building, pulling everyone out into space. The real Rick saves everyone with his portal gun.

The robot is dying, coughing up oil which upsets Morty. The robot's dying words remind him that if he's loved anything he has done, it was technically thanks to the real Rick who literally designed him to make Morty and the family happy.

As the president leaves the garage with his tail between his legs, Rick leads Morty down into the basement to let him in on his progress in hunting his nemesis, Rick Prime.

The episode, and Season 6, ends with a familiar rant from the mad scientist. "You and me, it's gonna take over your life, Morty. Rick and Morty Season 7, hunting my nemesis. Maybe trying to stay healthy while doing it. Juggling plates. Not every episode, Morty. Could be all happening in the background, who knows? No one will, except us."

Rick and Morty producer and showrunner Scott Marder told Newsweek in November that while he's around, there'll be a new season every year, and a timeline has already been laid out for Season 9.
