Rihanna Mocked Over Pregnancy Reveal Story

According to Rihanna, her iconic pregnancy reveal during her Super Bowl LVII halftime performance this year was unplanned—but people aren't buying it.

The Barbados-born singer, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, made her live music comeback, returning to the stage for the first time in five years, to perform a medley of some of her biggest hits. The 13-minute performance saw Rihanna and her fellow performers descend and dance on long, floating, LED-lit platforms.

Dressed in red, the Umbrella singer stood out against the backdrop of backup dancers, who were wearing all white. But users of X, formerly Twitter, thought her possible baby bump stood out more as her pregnancy became a trending topic online. Representatives later confirmed in a statement to Newsweek that Rihanna was pregnant with her second child after she and partner A$AP Rocky—otherwise known as Rakim Mayers—welcomed their first son in May.

While many thought her showing off the baby bump was an intentional move, Rihanna has since said it was completely accidental in an interview with Access Hollywood on December 19.

"My jumper couldn't zip up! No one knew I was pregnant, I just told my stylist, 'Just make sure it's stretchy,'" Rihanna explained. "So the undergarment was stretchy, and [the bottom of the jumpsuit] was baggy, but you know, the zip! It just stopped right there! So it had to be what it had to be."

However, people have shared their unfounded theories on X that Rihanna is lying about it being unintentional. They have flocked to the comment section of a post by the entertainment account PopCrave, with some going as far as to say the pregnancy saved her performance which many dubbed as "boring."

Newsweek reached out to a Rihanna representative for comment via email Friday.

"Ummmm that doesn't seem like it doesn't fit a little, it looks like it's purposely small up top to expose the belly," one person wrote.

"There's plenty of room for the zipper to zip up. Did she mean it got stuck there? Even if it got stuck, I'm sure there were a thousand assistants to 'un-stuck' it. SMH," said another.

"I'm glad she did reveal she was pregnant because that made up for the lack of energy she had," someone else commented.

"I love you, Rih, but this is a lie. You're telling me you have no fittings at all prior to the performance?" a fourth person wrote.

A fifth person added: "I think if she didn't reveal it people would have been even more upset with the performance. People were upset with it even though she was pregnant! - messed up."

Not everyone believes the conspiracy theory though, as some people have shared their love for the singer.

"Rihanna's Super Bowl pregnancy reveal is the epitome of spontaneity! The zipper may have had its own plan, but what a memorable and delightful surprise for everyone. Pregnancy glow and unexpected moments make for a magical reveal!" one person commented.

"WHY IS SHE SO ICONIC EVEN IN WARDROBE MALFUNCTION???" another asked.

A third added: "RiRi rules, pregnant or not."

Elsewhere in the interview, Rihanna raved about her growing family, revealing she had always wanted to be a mother.

"I hoped that I could have kids one day, and I hoped I could have them in love, and I hoped that I can be a part of a family that you know, breaks generational curses and just like, moves forward and does new things, and raises our kids better than we've been raised, and all the beautiful things, and it's happening, and I can't believe it," she said.

Rihanna also spoke of her deep connection with A$AP Rocky and how their dynamic has shifted since they've become parents.

"I loved him differently as a dad. This is major, major like—it's a turn-on. What a leader, what a great, patient, loving...and my kids are obsessed with him. I'm just a background, like, I'm an extra," she said.
