As fans know, Lucy has gone undercover alongside Sergeant Tim Bradford (Eric Winter), with the pair becoming romantically entangled during their mission, but things take a turn when Lucy's boyfriend, Chris Sanford (Kanoa Goo), dies.

Chris's passing appears to be a result of escaped serial killer Rosalind Dyer (Annie Wersching), with showrunner Alexi Hawley speaking to TVLine about what this means for Lucy in Season 5.

Hawley told the publication: "Rosalind was mad at Lucy for not showing up in court and not playing her game... That was her way of getting back at Lucy. And it also was a pretty brutal obstacle to throw in Chenford's way."

"Rosalind only chose Chris because of Lucy, so that's definitely going to have an impact," Hawley said, adding that Lucy will have "a great sense of guilt" this season over Chris's death.

Looking ahead in the season, the showrunner said: "It'll definitely have an impact on her point of view on what she was about to do with Tim. That is something she'll have to navigate — that shocking reality, or splash of cold water."

Fillion, meanwhile, spoke to Parade about his character's journey this season, and the actor teased how Nolan's other half Bailey may be more at risk than him because of her vocation.

"Nolan's a police officer, a very exciting vocation and it offers a lot of drama. That being said, Bailey is a firefighter. She's military. Bailey is in the line of danger all the time," the Firefly actor told the publication.

"If Nolan gets a call on the radio; you never know what it's going to be. If Bailey gets a call on the radio, it's because everything's on fire. There's a lot of danger for her vocation, and we're going to see Bailey get into some danger of her own."

In Season 5, Nolan will be becoming a Training Officer and this will present interesting challenges of its own for the the actor.

Hinting at what's to come, Fillion added: "Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) comes in and she is very motivated, very driven...and very, very young. It's apropos that she has Nolan as a T.O., because she makes a lot of the same mistakes that he made in the beginning. It's a very nice echo of how Nolan started."

The Rookie Season 5 airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, it is also available to stream on Hulu.
