A video clip of a Russian soldier allegedly speaking to his mother on the phone about having to flee Ukrainian advances has gone viral on social media.

The video was shared on Twitter by user Dmitri, who is with WarTranslated, an independent project that translates various materials about the war in Ukraine into English.

In the clip, the alleged soldier complains about the lack of support and preparedness he and his unit have in their fight against Ukrainian forces.

The video, posted on Thursday, has so far been viewed more than 150,000 times.

Dmitri added the caption: "Russian soldier in Kreminna tells his mother on the phone how he had to run away from Ukrainian tanks, she suggests picking him up, which is obviously impossible."

At one point during the call the mother can be heard sobbing as her son speaks about an expected attack from Ukrainian forces in the next 20 minutes.

Newsweek has not been able to independently confirm the authenticity of the video.

During the call, the Russian soldier said: "I'm at the very front line, for f**** sake. [Ukrainians] are in three directions. They're in the next forest. Mortars, tanks, working at us."

When asked what they were going to do, the soldier responds that nothing can be done.

He continued: "We were running away from a tank yesterday, f****** hell, it had thermal vision, for f**** sake, chopping everything.

"I don't know [when I'll be back], they say here that to go on leave, you need to be here for eight months."

The mother replied: "No f****** way, what about the contract?"

The soldier answered: "The contract doesn't matter, they said: either with no leg, no arm or 200 [dead].

"The boys said there might a [Ukrainian] offensive in 20 minutes, they heard it on the radio."

The mother asked to come pick her son up, an idea he dismissed, questioning how she would do that. She began to get audibly upset.

He continued: "I've been running away from the tanks for three days, for f**** sake. Anyway, mum.

"I don't want to be here. I'm not a warrior. I wasn't even f****** trained, to run away from the tanks, for f**** sake."

The soldier also notes that he is in Kremina in Donetsk Oblast but that his unit does not have significant support.

He closed the call by saying he is about to prepare for the suspected imminent attack and will call again when he can.

Newsweek has contacted the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment.
