'Sanditon' Season 3 Release Date: Has the PBS Show Been Renewed?

Sanditon has been airing on PBS and BritBox for the last six weeks, but that run is about to end—the current season finale is set to conclude at the end of April.

PBS is sure to have a number of period dramas to tide Masterpiece fans over, but that will not stop Sanditon fans wondering whether the show will get a Season 3.

Luckily, PBS has confirmed the status of Sanditon Season 3, so we already know if the show has been renewed or canceled. Plus, executives have spoken about exactly when they think the show will end for good.

Will there be a Sanditon Season 3?

Good news, Jane Austen fans: Charlotte Heywood will live to fall in love another day. When PBS saved Sanditon following its cancelation by ITV, they renewed it for Season 3 as well.

At the time of the renewal, Red Planet Pictures' (who make the show) joint managing director Belinda Campbell said in a statement: "We're thrilled to be able to invite viewers back to Sanditon for not just one but two further visits! Justin Young and Andrew Davies' sensational scripts are relevant, timely and captivating and we can't wait to share all the exciting new developments we have in store for our much loved characters. Now, more than ever, I think we could all do with some joy on our TV screens as well as a healthy dose of fresh sea air."

Masterpiece's executive producer Susanne Simpson, meanwhile, added: "Audiences can expect romance, humor and plenty of twists and turns in these new seasons of Sanditon."

Initially, the show had been canceled after poor ratings on its native ITV in the U.K. However, the show was a big ratings hit for PBS, and also sold to dozens of countries around the world.

The cancelation news led to a large campaign to get executives to resurrect the show, with some fans going so far as to send Sanditon gifts to execs. This included face masks and egg boxes—a reference to the line in the show, "Sanditon will rise from the ashes as sure as eggs are eggs."

When will Sanditon Season 3 air?

The release date for the show has not been revealed yet, but there will not be anything like the three-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2 this time around.

This is because filming on Sanditon Season 3 has already been completed. The show shot the two seasons back to back between July and December 2021 in and around Bristol, England. This was presumably to prevent the sort of scheduling conflicts that led to Theo James having to drop out of the current season.

This means that the Sanditon Season 3 release date is expected to come a year after the current season, in March 2023. As with the new episodes, BritBox will be airing the show outside of the U.S.

Will Season 3 be the last season of Sanditon?

Right now, it does seem like the show will end after Season 3.

This is per an interview between Campbell and Deadline, in which she did not rule out more, but also confirmed the story comes to an end with the next season.

She told the outlet: "In truth we have finished the story of Charlotte in terms of her love story. The three seasons are all different in tone so never say never but it is wonderful to have finished her story."

Sanditon airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
