A viral video has revealed a "secret" room that can be found on some airplanes.
The video was posted to TikTok last week by Michelle (@laxtoluxury), a content creator and blogger, who wrote: "Do you know about this secret room where your pilots and flight attendants sleep?" The post currently has more than 650,000 views and 24,000 likes.
The video opens with Michelle walking up a flight of stairs near the plane's cockpit.
"Did you know that there are entire secret rooms on some planes where your pilots and flight attendants can actually sleep on long haul flights?" she asks in the video's narration.
"It's called the crew rest, and on this Dreamliner, it's located behind the cockpit, up these hidden stairs that leads to a small room ... with two beds with curtains you can pull around them with additional privacy," she continues.
For context, the Dreamliner is a Boeing-model plane.
According to the Museum of Flight, the airliner "achieved a 20 percent reduction in fuel burn compared to previous airplanes in its class. It also maintains a lower maximum cabin altitude for improved passenger comfort and offers larger windows for viewing the scenery outside."
"The initial version, the 787-8, can carry 210 to 250 passengers. The longer 787-9 carries 250 to 290 passengers. The longest version, the 787-10, accommodates 300 to 330 passengers," the museum wrote, adding that these passenger numbers can vary.
One commenter was concerned by the fact that pilots can, and do, take naps during some flights.
"I certainly hope pilots don't go to sleep during flights," said light1989.
But Michelle reassured that he had nothing to worry about.
"They have to on long flights," she explained in a comment. "They rotate. I've taken several 17-hour flights — you def don't want your pilot awake and working for that long."
When answering reader questions for USA Today, retired airline captain John Cox explained that there are always two pilots on duty during long flights to allow pilots rest periods. In some cases, he said that two full flight crews are on board.
"One crew flies the takeoff and initial part of the flight, and then the second crew takes over for the remaining part of the flight and landing," he said.
"Depending on the length of the flight, each crew member may have eight or nine hours of duty time," he continued.
Many commenters on Michelle's video claimed that they already knew about the crew restrooms. But some of those hearing about the room for the first time said they'd pay to have access to it.
"From now on if an airline tells me they're fully booked, I know what I'm requesting," said wolf sam.
"I'd pay extra for that," added Jamal Note9.
