Sheree Zampino admits that co-parenting with ex-husband Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith has had its challenges.
"I'm not gonna say that it's easy," the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 54, told David Yontef on his Behind the Velvet Rope podcast on Monday.
"I think early on, like from the beginning, my heart and—I learned this from my mother—my heart is always for my child," she said. "My child comes first, you know? He really does. He comes first, so it's not about me anymore."
Zampino, 54, and Smith, 53, were married from 1992 to 1995 and welcomed their son, Trey Smith, in 1992. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star started dating Jada, 50, in 1995, and they wed in 1997. Jaden Smith arrived in 1998 and Willow Smith was born two years later.

"I'm grateful that we're all kind of on the same frequency and the same page," the founder of body butter company Whoop Ash said of the trio's relationship today.
She added that "anyone could have been Trey's mother" or "Jaden and Willow's mother," but "[God] picked the three of us. I think that's why we're able to do it and show the world, really. That's powerful."
Yontef acknowledged that there "are a lot of moving forces and a lot could go wrong," to which Zampino replied, "When you have a mutual respect, it becomes easier."
She added, "My thing with Jada was, like, as long as she treats him well, we're good. And she's treated him well, and she's loved him."
It's "not rocket science" when it comes to that aspect of co-parenting, Zampino said, but it isn't always easy.
With "three different dynamics, three different personalities, different belief systems and different ways of doing things," they've occasionally "bumped heads" over the years, she said, adding that "it hasn't been pretty."
That said, they "get back on that horse and we press on," Zampino continued. "We do what we have to do because, again, at the end of the day, it's about the family and it's about the kids. We have a responsibility to them."
She and Smith have maintained a close bond following their divorce, with the reality star congratulating her ex when he won the best actor Oscar for his role in King Richard.
At the time, Sheree took to Instagram to share a photo of herself posing with Smith.
"Epic Night!" she captioned a photo with him. "Congratulations again—when 1 wins we all win! #family1st."
The Hollywood Exes alum has remained mum, however, about Smith's controversial slap during the Oscars ceremony. Smith walked onstage and smacked host Chris Rock after he made a joke that referred to his wife's hair loss. Over the years, Jada Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia, a disease that attacks the immune system and can cause hair loss.
"I'm not talking about this with you, David," Zampino said, laughing, when Yontef brought it up during their chat. She added that she thought King Richard "was incredible."
