Snow Totals in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania Reach 40 Inches From Winter Storm Gail

Winter Storm Gail hit the northeast U.S. last night as some residents of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania noticed as much as 40 inches of snow outside this morning.

Snowfall across New York City, however, was significantly less. Manhattan saw 10 inches of snowfall, according to WNBC-TV.

In Woodlawn, an area of the Bronx, 10.5 inches of snow was reported. The Whitestone area of Queens, New York saw around 9 inches of snow, while areas Staten Island and Brooklyn reported approximately 5 inches and 3 inches respectively.

New Jersey's snowfall levels near those of New York City. The state saw a 10.7 to 5.8 inch blanket of snow from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to WNBC.

Areas of northern Pennsylvania, including Litchfield, Alba, Sayre, Blossburg, Tioga and Convington, however, reported significantly more snowfall. According to Weather Nation, the state saw between 43 and 28.2 inches of snow.

Although weather conditions have improved in most areas early Thursday, heavy snow is expected to continue across the New England region.

Areas of Massachusetts, including Boston, will see more snowfall throughout much of the day on Thursday, according to AccuWeather meteorologists. The snowfall in that area is estimated to end around 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.

State leaders previously urged residents to remain cautious amid the winter storm.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued a winter weather emergency proclamation on Tuesday.

"The commonwealth's emergency preparedness teams have spent a great deal of time and energy over the last several months supporting efforts to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic and help the commonwealth weather this public health emergency and ensure vaccines are delivered as planned," said Wolf.

"This proclamation makes it easier for all of those involved in vaccine delivery and keeping people safe to do their jobs," the governor continued.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also warned residents to be careful during a briefing on Wednesday.

"The winter storm is here and New York's Strongest are ready to go. Plows and salt spreaders are out this evening," said de Blasio. "Help us keep the streets safe: stay home."

The mayor continued: "If you must travel, use public transportation. This could be the biggest storm of the year. Stay home and stay safe."

The National Weather Service also issued coastal flooding warnings and advisories from North Carolina to Massachusetts. Flooding is expected to affect the Jersey Shore and coastal Delaware during Thursday morning's high tide.
