What Is 'The Son' About?
The Son tells the story of the dysfunctional Miller family and the mental-health struggles of their 17-year-old son, Nicholas Miller (played by Zen McGrath).
Nicholas's parents Peter (Hugh Jackman) and Kate Miller (Laura Dern) have been divorced for several years, and their separation, amongst other things, has taken a serious toll on Nicholas' mental health. He is worryingly depressed and feels like he does not belong, helpless that no one understands the "pain" he feels, "all of the time."
Skipping school and feeling unable to live at home with his mother Kate, Nicholas moves in with his father and his new partner, Beth (Vanessa Kirby), his new stepmother, who just gave birth to his stepbrother, Theo.
Juggling with his own career and family, Peter tries his best to look after his son, whilst trying to fight his tendency to turn into his own father.
As Nicholas' mental state deteriorates, The Son brings to the surface issues of intergenerational trauma and how love is sometimes, not enough.
