The Miami Marlins are in the midst of a full-scale rebuild that could potentially flip their roster from one of the worst in the league to one of the best over the next few seasons.
But this roster rebuild will come with a lot of blockbuster trades. Miami has already made a few trades dating back to last season, but it could look to deal away its ace, Sandy Alcántara, in the next few weeks.
Alcántara won the National League Cy Young award in 2022 before having a mediocre 2023 season and missing the 2024 campaign with Tommy John surgery. This season, he's been all right, but his potential remains as high as anybody in the league when he finds his stride again.
He's likely to be traded this season, but who could be the top landing spot for the righty?

Trade proposal 1: Red Sox land a star beside Garrett Crochet
- Red Sox acquire: RHP Sandy Alcántara
- Marlins acquire: UTL Ceddanne Rafaela, SS/2B Franklin Arias, RHP Hunter Dobbins
The Red Sox are the top team in the sweepstakes for Alcántara. Though they added Garrett Crochet in the offseason, they still need another ace, and they have Ceddanne Rafaela, who could be used as the headliner in the return.
Besides Rafaela, the Red Sox could part ways with Franklin Arias and Hunter Dobbins to bring in the star righty from the Marlins. Boston might have to part ways with another top 20 prospect to get the deal done.
Trade proposal 2: Orioles finally add an ace
- Orioles acquire: RHP Sandy Alcántara
- MarLins acquire: OF Heston Kjerstad, OF Enrique Bradfield Jr., RHP Chayce McDermott, SS Griff O'Ferrall
The Orioles need to add a pitcher as badly as any team in the league. Their pitching staff is one of the worst in the league right now. Their desperation could lead to a massive trade for Alcántara.
The return would be led by Heston Kjerstad and Enrique Bradfield Jr. Both of these stars could be cornerstones in Miami's offense for years to come. Chayce McDermott has the potential to be an ace and Griff O'Ferrall is an elite prospect as well.
Trade proposal 3: Cubs replace Justin Steele with an ace
- Cubs acquire: RHP Sandy Alcántara
- Marlins acquire: RHP Cade Horton, C/1B Moisés Ballesteros, OF Kevin Alcántara, RHP Jaxon Wiggins
The Cubs need to add a starting pitcher following Justin Steele's season-ending elbow surgery. Alcántara would fill in as the Cubs' ace alongside Shota Imanaga and company. Though Alcántara hasn't been elite this season, he has a few years of affordable team control and the potential to return to being an ace.
The return the Cubs would send would be massive. Horton is a future ace with the potential to land in the Marlins' rotation right now. Ballesteros is a future impact bat while Kevin Alcántara has the potential to be a star, too.
