The Chicago Cubs have needed to add a starting pitcher to their roster for the last few months. They didn't heavily address this need in the offseason, and it's coming back to bite them already.

A few Cubs starters have struggled early in the year, and Justin Steele is set to miss the rest of the season after undergoing elbow surgery. Chicago's need for a starting pitcher is as prominent now as ever.

On Monday, the Cubs took a step in the right direction toward addressing this glaring need.

According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are acquiring veteran pitcher Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners.

Pomeranz, 36, had been pitching in the Mariners' minor league system at the Triple-A level. He last pitched in the big leagues in 2021 as a member of the San Diego Padres.

That season, he made 27 appearances out of the San Diego bullpen and held a 1.75 ERA. He suffered an injury that sidelined him for 2022 and hasn't been in the big leagues since.

The veteran tossed just 4 2/3 innings in the minor leagues in 2022. The next year, he recorded just 5 2/3 innings before tossing nine innings in 2024.

So far with the Mariners, Pomeranz had pitched in nine games and held a 4.66 ERA.

The lefty pitched for Cubs manager Craig Counsell in 2019 as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers. That season, Pomeranz tossed 26 1/3 innings for Counsell.
