Mets Surprising Trade Idea Would Bring 2-Time All-Star to Queens to Save Rotation

The New York Mets signed Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to add to their starting rotation last offseason. They also re-signed Sean Manaea. However, Manaea and Montas have started the season on the injured list while Holmes has struggled early.

The Mets have a star-studded offense and could look to add a star to their rotation this summer. Bleacher Report's Joseph Zucker proposed the idea of the Mets targeting Brandon Woodruff at the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade.

"When they already have a payroll eclipsing $300 million, the Mets might be a little wary of acquiring a player with a big contract or due to receive one next winter," wrote Zucker. "With that in mind, Brandon Woodruff would be a more cost-effective stopgap should New York's starting pitching regress."

Woodruff missed all of 2024 after shoulder surgery. He has yet to make his 2025 debut, but he appeared in spring training and has been building up. He is about to start a 30-day rehab assignment with the Nashville Sounds and could be ready to return soon.

"If he can maintain his usual production (3.10 career ERA and a 3.19 FIP) once he's back, he'll be a valuable trade chip for the Milwaukee Brewers if they're sellers at the deadline," wrote Zucker.

Woodruff is a two-time All-Star and has been really effective when he is healthy. The Brewers have dealt with a slew of injuries to their starting rotation and are awaiting Woodruff's return. However, if their makeshift rotation cannot keep them in contention, they could be willing to deal Woodruff.

He is due $5 million this season and has a $20 million mutual option for 2026.
