Third baseman Alex Bregman has gotten off to a strong start this season with the Boston Red Sox. Entering Wednesday, he was near the top of every offensive category for the Red Sox.
Former baseball general manager Jim Bowden believes Bregman will hit the free agency market once again when the season ends.

"Last offseason in free agency, Bregman made it clear that if he didn't return to the Astros, he wanted to sign with the Red Sox — and he did, turning down more years and dollars from the Tigers in the process," wrote Bowden. "Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his deal."
Through 191 at-bats this season, Bregman holds a .304 average with 11 home runs and 35 RBI. The 31-year-old third baseman holds a .954 OPS and posted 3.0 bWAR before the calendar flips to June. Bregman bet on himself in his contract with the Red Sox this season and could easily cash in during the offseason.
"His free-agent market should be even more robust than last offseason with the Red Sox joined by the Yankees, Tigers, Astros, Phillies and even the Dodgers; he would be an upgrade for all of them at the hot corner," Bowden wrote.
Perhaps the one most excited about this news is Rafael Devers, who may end up returning to third base if Bregman signs with a new team in the offseason. The Red Sox could then use the extra money not going toward Bregman to pursue other free agents such as Kyle Tucker.
