The Boston Red Sox traded away top catching prospect Kyle Teel this offseason as they looked to roll with Connor Wong as their backstop of the future.
But an early-season injury has sidelined Wong and left the Red Sox with a gaping hole behind the plate. Boston may need to fill this spot with a trade ahead of the trade deadline.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report linked the Red Sox to a shocking trade with the Milwaukee Brewers that would replace the injured Wong with superstar catcher William Contreras.

"And while the Red Sox don't appear to need much (aside from better health) after a busy offseason, the catcher spot has quickly become a glaring concern," Miller wrote. "Connor Wong had a breakout year at the plate in 2024, triple-slashing .280/.333/.425 and making appearances at first, second, and DH to get as many ABs as possible. But he started out 2-for-23 with a pair of run-less, RBI-less singles before landing on the IL with a fractured pinkie.
"We'll see how long he's out, and how well he can bounce back when he does return. While Wong is out, Carlos Narváez will get as much work behind the plate as he can handle, but he had appeared in just six big-league games prior to this season, making the roster mostly due to his defense."
Contreras has been one of the best catchers in the league for the last few seasons, but the Brewers are seemingly entering some sort of a rebuild. Milwaukee usually sits atop the National League Central, but it's struggling early on this season.
With that in mind, the Red Sox could package a few solid prospects together to make a deal with the Brewers. Even when Wong returns, Contreras would be a huge upgrade to Boston's offense.
