In late February, Embiid was ruled out for the season due to being medically unable to play. Embiid and the 76ers started meeting with doctors and specialists to determine if treatment could alleviate his knee issues.
This has been a common occurrence for the former NBA MVP. It's been one thing after another for Embiid and the 76ers. Despite his success on the court, Embiid is hardly available to play.
After the surgery, Embiid will be reevaluated in six weeks and is expected to make a full recovery. Prior to this scheduled surgery, Embiid was experiencing swelling in his left knee, which has been giving him trouble recently.
Because of these issues, he was held to 19 games. He averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in that span while shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 29.9 percent from deep.
In the past two seasons, Embiid has played in only 58 games out of a possible 164. In his career, the seven-time All-Star has played in a little over half of the possible games, 452 games out of 883.
Embiid has only played in 60+ games twice in his nine-year career. Those seasons came back to back during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. The latter of those seasons was his NBA MVP season.
Embiid was fantastic that season, recording 33.1 points per game, 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.7 blocks while shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 33.0 percent from three in 66 games and 34.6 minutes of action.
As for the 76ers, this season has been far from ideal. As things stand, they are far from the playoff picture and even further from the play-in picture. They sit as the 13th seed in the Eastern Conference with a 23-53 record. They have lost nine consecutive games and have the fifth-best odds of securing the No. 1 overall pick this season.
Not only has Embiid missed time this season, but so has their key free agent pickup Paul George. He is out with a left adductor muscle and knee. Philly's star rookie Jared McCain is also out for the season with a lateral tear in the meniscus in his left knee.
The 76ers will hope for better health next season.
