Boston Celtics superstar forward Jayson Tatum will miss the rest of the series and likely beyond. He suffered a torn Achilles on Monday night in Game 4 against the New York Knicks.

ESPN's Shams Charania shared the news via X.

Tatum suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter. The Celtics are down 3-1 in the series and are on the brink of elimination.

Game 5 is on Wednesday night.

The Celtics offered this update on their superstar forward.

"Jayson Tatum today underwent successful surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. No timetable is currently available for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Further updates will be provided when appropriate."

Tatum left the game with 3:07 remaining in the fourth quarter. Boston called a timeout to remove him from the game.

Tatum undoubtedly had his best game of the series as he recorded 42 points on 16-of-28 shooting from the field, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 40 minutes of action.

In the series, Tatum is averaging 25.0 points per game, 11.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.8 steals while shooting 40 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from three in four games.

The Celtics will now have to stay alive in the series, as they are one loss away from being eliminated in the second round. Boston is looking to become the first team since the 2018 Golden State Warriors to repeat as champions, but that is unlikely to happen with Tatum out for the rest of the series.

Before the news broke, Charania shared a grim update on Tatum's status.

"The Boston Celtics are bracing for the worst around Jayson Tatum and that right foot," Charania said on SportsCenter. "He underwent an MRI today in New York City, and the Celtics, since last night, have been expecting a severe injury for Tatum."

Unfortunately, that was the case for the Celtics, who will now do their best to regroup for the rest of the series.

Boston enters Game 5 in front of their home crowd as the home favorites with a -4.5 spread. Not only is Tatum ruled out, but the Celtics also have their key forward, Sam Hauser, on the injury report.

Hauser is ruled as probable for Game 5.

The Tatum injury could change the entire trajectory of the Celtics moving forward.
