Reports indicate Mitchell was traded from the Raptors to the Heat today in exchange for veteran Tucker, a second-round draft pick, and cash.
Mitchell's future had been uncertain as he's set to become a restricted free agent after the 2024-25 season. While the Raptors could have matched any offer Mitchell received on the open market, they decided to trade him rather than risk losing him for nothing or seeing him leave on his own terms.
This marks a quick exit for Mitchell from Toronto, especially after he was acquired just months ago in a deal with the Sacramento Kings.
The Raptors sent Jalen McDaniels to Sacramento in exchange for Mitchell, Sasha Vezenkov, and Jamal Shead during the 2024 NBA Draft.
Despite the promise he showed earlier in his career, particularly in his standout rookie season with the Kings, Mitchell's role and production had been on the decline.
Once regarded as a promising young talent, Mitchell's numbers in Sacramento dipped to just 5.3 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 rebounds per game during the 2023-24 season. However, he showed improvements in his shooting, hitting 45.2% from the field and 36.1% from three-point range.
After joining Toronto, Mitchell's production ticked up to 6.3 points, 4.6 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game, while maintaining solid shooting efficiency (43.4% from the field and 35.8% from deep).

Although Mitchell's overall output has been inconsistent in recent seasons, his defensive versatility has remained a major strength.
At just 26, his quickness allows him to guard multiple positions effectively, and his defensive presence was evident in the 2023-24 season, where opponents shot 2.0% worse from three and 2.1% worse from beyond 15 feet when he was the primary defender, per NBA.com.
Mitchell's shooting improvement and elite defensive abilities give him considerable upside, and it's easy to envision him becoming a key contributor in a more prominent role.
While his production hasn't fully matched his potential lately, the Heat might offer him the opportunity to expand his game. Despite his trade away from Toronto being unexpected so soon after his arrival, Mitchell still has a promising future ahead.
