San Antonio Spurs star guard De'Aaron Fox will not play the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

Fox will undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday for tendon damage in his left pinkie.

ESPN's Shams Charania shared via X.

Fox, 27, played in only 17 games for the Spurs. The Louisiana native was traded to the Spurs on Feb. 2 after spending the first seven-plus years of his career with the Sacramento Kings.

Fox was traded alongside Jordan McLaughlin to the Spurs in a three-team trade involving the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls sent Zach LaVine, Sidy Cissoko, three first-round picks, and two second-round picks to the Kings. Zach Collins, Tre Jones, and a 2025 first-round pick were also sent to the Bulls, who also received Kevin Huerter from the Kings.

The loss of Fox for the rest of the season is a string of significant losses for San Antonio. Not only will they be without Fox, but they will also be without their superstar center Victor Wembanyama, and legendary head coach Gregg Popovich.

Popovich will not return to the sideline this season after suffering a mild stroke in November. As for Wembanyama, he is ruled out for the season due to blood clots in his right shoulder.

Popovich has been coaching the Spurs since 1996-97, serving as their head coach for 28 seasons. This makes him the longest-tenured active coach in the NBA and all major US sports leagues. He has led the Spurs to five titles.

Wembanyama's season ended abruptly. While the injury is severe, he is expected to be back on the court as soon as next season.

Fox finishes his season averaging 19.7 points per game, 4.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 1.5 steals while shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 27.4 percent from three in 34.0 minutes of action in his Spurs tenure.

The Spurs are 27-37 in the season thus far, they currently sit as the No. 12 seed in the loaded Western Conference. While they have a chance to get the 10th spot for the play-in, they will likely pass on it and get the best possible pick they can for the 2025 NBA Draft.

According to Tankathon, the Spurs have the 10th-best odds of getting the No. 1 pick, with a three percent chance. Losing Fox for the season will only increase that.
