San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has suffered a medical emergency while at a restaurant. The veteran coach was taken away in an ambulance after 911 officials received a call for an elder who had fainted.

TMZ reported the news of the incident and is reporting that he has been dealing with the lingering effects of a stroke he suffered last year. Popovich stepped away from basketball this season due to his health, and his return remains in doubt.

The 76-year-old coach seems to have suffered a setback in his recovery process.

Earlier this year, Spurs CEO R.C. Buford provided an update on Popovich's health. Within, he mentioned that the veteran coach has been working toward a return, but it never ended up happening.

"All I can share is he's attacking his rehab in a way that ... you know, Pop, you've observed him for years," Buford said. "The same resilience that he's shown over the course of our career as a coach, he's approaching his return in his rehab in an incredibly unique way. The relationships that he had with our former players and the care that they're sharing with him is amazing. And his improvement continues."

The Spurs missed the postseason this year, but there has been hope about a Popovich return for next season. The future of Popovich in the NBA remains very much in doubt, especially with this new medical scare.

Popovich is widely seen as one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, having won five NBA titles over his career. His first title came during the 1998-99 season, behind strong performances from David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

The veteran also won during the 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014 seasons. Popovich has spent his entire head coaching career with the Spurs and has left an impressive legacy in San Antonio.

The hope is that he can return to the sidelines next season, but the medical staff will need to fully clear him. San Antonio won't allow him to return until he is healthy enough to take on the job.
