Young and the Knicks share a well-documented rivalry—one that runs especially deep with the New York fanbase. It all traces back to the 2021 playoffs when Young and the Hawks knocked the Knicks out in the first round, sparking a heated dynamic that's yet to cool off. By the looks of it, it will not cool off.
Since then, Young has been the target of relentless jeers from Knicks fans, including the now-infamous "F*** Trae Young" chants that echoed through Madison Square Garden and beyond. Even though that series is now years in the past, the animosity hasn't faded. Knicks fans continue to make their feelings known, taking any opportunity to go at the four-time All-Star.
Young has faced the Knicks 24 times in his career, while he only has seven wins over them, he has done his part against New York. In his career, Young averages 25.6 points, 9.8 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals while shooting 39.8 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from three in 35.3 minutes of action.
Earlier this season, the 26-year-old star guard described his dynamic with Knicks fans as a "love-hate" relationship. True to form, he leaned into the tension once again.
In a game back in early December, Young stirred up the crowd with another signature moment—this time, mimicking a dice roll celebration after helping his team clinch a spot in the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas. The gesture added another layer to his already fiery history with New York, drawing both boos and headlines.
Young had this to say about that moment in December.
"We're going to Vegas, so that's what I had to," Young said.
The Knicks have a chance to reach their first NBA Finals since 1999, as they will host the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. As for the Hawks, the furthest Young has taken them is the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, where they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games.
