The San Francisco 49ers have two big contracts hanging in the balance, one being for star quarterback Brock Purdy and one for star tight end George Kittle. Purdy has reported for offseason workouts, as his deal is being discussed by the front office, however, that is not the case for Kittle.

According to Adam Schefter, Kittle has not reported for voluntary offseason workouts, which begin today.
#49ers QB Brock Purdy has arrived with his team for voluntary offseason conditioning, per me and @TomPelissero, as the two sides are having continued conversations about an extension.

Ian Rapoport has also reported on the Kittle absence, stating, "Star TE George Kittle won't be in attendance, as his contract extension is not close."
The 49ers cannot lose another star player, especially one on the offense. The team allowed Deebo Samuel to seek a trade, and he did so by joining the Washington Commanders.

There have also been rumors that the 49ers are exploring trade options for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who suffered a torn ACL in 2024. Should he be moved, the 49ers would be down two wide receivers, leaving Kittle, Jauan Jennings, and Ricky Persall as the main pass catchers.
Kittle has been one of the best blocking and pass-catching tight ends in the game. He has made the Pro Bowl in the last four seasons, been named an All-Pro in the last three, and was nominated for Offensive Player of the Year in 2024.
Kittle finished the 2024 season with 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns. He is as important to the 49ers' offensive plan as Travis Kelce is to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kittle continually showcases his dominance not only in the pass game, but also lining up to protect Purdy and open up running lanes for the running backs on the team. He is one player that the 49ers cannot afford to lose.
Kittle signed a 5 year, $75 million extension in 2020 and is entering the final year of the contract in 2025. He will need an extension, presumably before the season begins, and it sounds as if he is going to play hardball to ensure he gets that contract.
The 49ers could find themselves in trouble having to hand out massive contract extensions to both Purdy and Kittle, but both need to happen. Purdy has played wonderful football and is severely underpaid for what he provides.
The same can be said for Kittle, and it sounds like he is not going to suit up for workouts until the deal is done.
