Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance has found his new home, as he is signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. Lance will presumably be the direct backup for Justin Hebert.

Lance was talked about as being the next man up for the Cowboys should anything happen to Prescott, and was even touted as his replacement. However, after a rough couple of seasons with Dallas, he is now on the move.

According to Adam Schefter, Lance signed a one-year deal that is worth up to $6.2 million to join the Chargers.

This is a sneaky good signing for the Chargers, as Herbert has dealt with some injury concerns in his last two seasons. In 2023, the star signal caller missed four games after undergoing season-ending surgery on his hand.

Despite not missing any games in 2024, Herbert dealt with a significant ankle sprain at the beginning and end of the season. Though he was able to soldier on, there could be some deeper concerns about his overall health moving forward.

Considering Herbert needed a quality backup, the Chargers may have found that in Lance. The former first-round pick got some playing time in 2024, appearing in four games, throwing for 266 yards and one interception.

The numbers from the 2024 season do not invoke a sense of confidence for Lance's abilities, but the young quarterback hasn't had a chance to truly emerge in the league.

Lance was drafted No. 3 overall out of North Dakota State by the San Francisco 49ers, after they traded up with the Miami Dolphins, giving up first-round picks in 2021, 2022, and 2023 to acquire the young passer.

Lance played in six games in the 2021 season, appearing in six games and throwing 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. Despite being drafted so high, he remained as the backup to Jimmy Garappolo.

The 2022 season wasn't much better for Lance, as he suffered a season-ending ankle injury early on in the season. Following the emergence of Brock Purdy the same season, Lance was pushed even further down the depth chart in 2023.

Following the 2023 season, Lance was traded to the Cowboys. Despite potentially being the backup there, he was moved to the third string and became a full healthy scratch for the 2024 season.

After Prescott went down in 2024, Lance was the backup for Cooper Rush. Rush suffered an injury as well, calling Lance into action. His limited time did not produce much in terms of redemption.

Now, Lance will presumably battle it out with Taylor Henicke to be the backup for Herbert in the 2025 season.
