The New York Jets have a new general manager: former Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey.
According to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero, "The #Jets agreed to terms with Darren Mougey as their general manager, sources tell The Insiders. A former QB, Mougey spent 13 years in Denver, most recently as assistant GM and working with Sean Payton. Now he's teaming up with onetime Payton assistant Aaron Glenn in New York."

Mougey has built a steady and impressive career in the NFL, beginning with the Denver Broncos back in 2012. Starting as a scouting intern, Mougey quickly made a name for himself, climbing the ranks through various scouting and personnel roles.
By 2020, he was promoted to assistant director of college scouting, and just a year later, he became the team's director of player personnel. In 2022, Mougey was named assistant general manager, a position he held until his recent move to the New York Jets.
Mougey's promotion to Jets GM marks a significant shift in leadership for the team. At 39, he will be the youngest general manager in Jets history since Mike Tannenbaum, who was hired nearly 20 years ago.
His hiring follows a competitive second interview process, where Mougey emerged as one of the top candidates. Joining him in the final round of interviews were Trey Brown and Lance Newmark, but it was Mougey who secured the role, ushering in a new era of leadership alongside Aaron Glenn, who was named the team's head coach earlier in the week.

Although Mougey's rapid rise through the ranks is impressive, his career hasn't been without its bumps. One of the most notable controversies was his support for the hiring of Nathaniel Hackett as head coach of the Broncos, a decision that backfired as Hackett was fired mid-season in 2022.
Despite this, Mougey's success in personnel and his experience in navigating a regime change in Denver have helped position him as a promising GM candidate.
However, the Jets are inheriting a whole bucket of troubles. With the longest playoff drought in the NFL, New York's roster is filled with question marks—none more significant than Aaron Rodgers.
At 41, Rodgers' future in the league is uncertain, and Mougey will have to decide if the quarterback can be the centerpiece of the team for another season or if it's time for a reset.
The Jets also face uncertainty at wide receiver with Garrett Wilson, a superstar talent who was frustrated by his role in New York in 2024. With a potential rebuild on the horizon, Mougey may need to make difficult decisions, including possibly moving on from one or both of these marquee players to reshape the roster.
