NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Reacts to Potential Tush Push Ban

The tush push has become a sensation and the primary talk of the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl this past season. It is a simple-looking play that they have seemingly been the only team to perfect, but it brings lots of controversy with it.

It is not the most interesting play to watch. To grossly simplify the play, it is a glorified quarterback sneak, where the player under center takes the ball and gets pushed forward. Fans would prefer to watch quarterbacks drop back and launch deep passes.

Another concern with the play is injury potential for all players at the line of the scrimmage.

It is a grueling play, especially for the offensive and defensive linemen. That is part of why many owners want the play banned, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell seems potentially on board with them.

While this isn't a concrete statement saying he wants it banned, it seems the commissioner is not against banning it. The owners have the most power in the league, but that doesn't mean the commissioner doesn't have sway on what they should vote.

While it is also possible teams are just envious of not being able to replicate the tush push, the medical risk seems like the ultimate decider of the debate. If more concrete data can be found exposing the tush push as dangerous, a final decision could be reached sooner than later.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for more information on the issue to be released to the public, as the process is moving rather quickly at the moment.

As of now, the proposal to ban the play, originally provided by the Green Bay Packers, has been tabled, with no clear indication of the final outcome.

It may be an even split currently, with no clear majority forming on the issue. That could mean input from Roger Goodell could shift it closer to a final decision.

If that ends up being the case, it seems like the tush push will be banned next season, which would be tough news for the Philadelphia Eagles and fans who are hoping for a Super Bowl repeat next season.
