This deal is certainly a surprise as Smith had been the starter for Seattle over the past few years. According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, the return for Smith will be a third-round draft pick.

This deal comes just days before NFL free agency is about to begin. There have been all sorts of rumors swirling about where the Raiders would go in terms of the quarterback position.
Smith now reunites with former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. There is an expectation that the Raiders will give Smith a new contract as part of this trade.

Smith has seen his career take a massive jump over the past few seasons, starting with his chemistry with Carroll. After being labeled as a bust while with the New York Jets, Smith has completely reinvented himself with the Seahawks.
The veteran made his first Pro Bowl in the 2022 season with Seattle and was named Comeback Player of the Year. Smith put up 4,282 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions during that season.

The former West Virginia product followed that season up by throwing for 3,624 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2023. In 2024, he threw for 4,320 yards with 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Las Vegas will now go forward with the two-time Pro Bowl signal-caller as their leader for the upcoming season.
The Seahawks are at a strange impasse with DK Metcalf asking for a trade and the team releasing Tyler Lockett. This trade of Smith signals that Seattle is ready for a big change and they will look to make it under second-year head coach Mike Macdonald.
Seattle missed the playoffs under Macdonald in his first season but they were very competitive. The front office believes that he is the right coach to lead them forward but he likely wants to bring in his own hand-picked quarterback.
The NFL trade season is upon us and this league never lacks the drama needed to keep football at the center of attention.
