Garoppolo will head into his second season with the Rams after signing as a free agent with the team last season. His deal is worth $11 million.
The signing of Jimmy-G almost comes as no surprise. He threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns in a Week 18 loss to Seattle while mostly playing with other backups (against the Seahawks' starters).
It was an impressive performance, and a far cry from what Garoppolo did the year before in seven games for the Raiders (seven TDs, nine interceptions). In any case, he's 33 years old and will return to Los Angeles as Matthew Stafford's backup.
The Rams have arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the league and a more than competent backup quarterback if worse comes to worse with Stafford.
Garoppolo, the New England Patriots' second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, has had his run as a starter. He became a full-time starter with the San Francisco 49ers via trade in 2017. His time in the Bay Area was spectacular, as he recorded a 38-17 record in 57 games and 55 starts.
He completed 1104 passes of his 1632 attempts, completing 67.6 percent of them for 13599 yards, 82 touchdowns, and 42 interceptions, and averaged 238.6 yards per game with a 99.2 passer rating in his time with San Francisco.
However, Garoppolo's time after that was not that great. The Illinois native signed a three-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023, but it was a stint to forget. He only played in seven games with six starts and completed 110 passes on 169 attempts for 1205 yards. He had seven touchdowns and nine interceptions with a 77.7 passer rating.
Things were not pretty in Vegas for Garoppolo and he was eventually cut in mid-March of last year. That eventually landed him in L.A. and he will play a vital role for the Rams similar to what he did last year.
Garoppolo will reunite with his former wide receiver, Davante Adams, who was a teammate in Las Vegas. The two didn't have the best chemistry, and that was evident when Adams appeared on the Netflix show Receivers.
Nonetheless, Adams should get most, if not all, his passes from Stafford.
