Staley has spent the better part of two decades coaching at the collegiate level and the NFL. He worked his way up from coaching jobs with James Caroll and James Madison until he finally landed in the NFL in 2017 with the Chicago Bears.
Staley would serve as the Bears' outside linebackers coach from 2017 to 2018, then move on as outside linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos in 2019. Staley would land his first coordinator position with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, but would only last one season.
Staley was hired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021 and would remain with the team until he was fired in 2023. During his tenure with the Chargers, he often called plays on defense.
Staley ended his three-season stint with the Chargers, posting a record of 24-24. He would lead the team to a playoff berth in 2022, but L.A. lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Following a 5-9 record in 2023, Staley was fired before the season ended. He would then shift and move to assistant head coach position with the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.
There was a lot of belief that Staley would land the 49ers' defensive coordinator position when Nick Sorenson was relieved of his duties, but the team pivoted and brought back Robert Saleh Saleh also experienced a short stint as head coach of the New York Jets.
Despite Staley's struggles as a head coach, he is one of the most respected defensive minds in football. He will now join Moore in New Orleans, with the hope they can help turn things around for the Saints.
The Saints ended the season with a paltry 5-12 record, despite having playmakers on both sides of the ball. Now, a new and young head coach in Moore will be tasked with bringing the team back to NFC relevancy.
Staley is also a younger coach and should offer a wealth of knowledge in terms of coaching and defensive prowess for Moore's staff.
