Why Blockbuster Trade Between Patriots and Rams Makes Perfect Sense

Based on the reports and moves made so far this offseason, both the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams are looking to move off of an intriguing asset.

The Patriots have Drake Maye, the clear franchise QB, and signed Joshua Dobbs to be the backup. That makes makes second-year quarterback out of Tennessee Joe Milton expendable.

The Rams have already made it clear they are looking to move on from Cooper Kupp based on reports that they are looking to trade him or release him if they can't find a trade partner. When the team signed Davante Adams, they confirmed those reports.

With the Patriots being in need of wide receiver help, and the Rams barely bringing back 37-year-old QB Matthew Stafford, an interesting idea would be to exchange the two players.

It may not be quite as simple as exchanging each player 1-for-1, especially with the money the team might have to pay for Kupp, but the two players would serve as the foundation of a blockbuster trade.

This trade would make sense for the Patriots, because they have the cap space to eat Kupp's contract, and would be trading their QB3 to get him. Kupp, while on the decline and has been injury-prone entering his age-32 season, would bring a veteran presence and still starting-level talent that would be a huge upgrade to the receiving core.

From the Rams' perspective, adding an intriguing young quarterback in Joe Milton to backup Matthew Stafford for a couple of seasons would make sense.

Stafford could mentor the fellow gunslinger and help Milton build up a solid foundation as the future starting quarterback under Sean McVay.

The team would also get an actual asset in return for Kupp, which may be more than they are currently anticipating with the veteran's likely release at the start of the official free agency period.

While the swap of players makes a lot of sense for both teams, the value itself would be the holdup. Other more QB-needy teams may be more interested in Milton, and the Patriots could probably get more than a player who will likely be released anyway.

However, just as Milton would be more valuable to specific teams than the Patriots, Kupp would be more valuable to the Patriots than the Rams, so the swap could be worth it, especially if the Patriots don't feel confident they can acquire a top receiver otherwise.

A 1-for-1 swap of this magnitude would be unprecedented in the NFL, but would also be a fun and interesting move for both teams.
