Stephen 'tWitch' Boss, the popular former DJ on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show, has died suddenly, aged 40.

The death of the So You Think You Can Dance judge was confirmed by his wife, Allison Holker Boss.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to share my husband Stephen has left us," Allison, 34, said in a statement to People.

"Stephen lit up every room he stepped into. He valued family, friends and community above all else and leading with love and light was everything to him. He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans.

"To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt," she continued. "I am certain there won't be a day that goes by that we won't honor his memory. We ask for privacy during this difficult time for myself and especially for our three children.

"Stephen, we love you, we miss you, and I will always save the last dance for you," she concluded.

Boss is survived by his wife Allison and his children Weslie, 14, Maddox, 6, and Zaia, 3.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner is still investigating his cause of death, according to People.

Boss first joined Ellen in 2014 where he became a big hit with viewers and was added as a permanent fixture on the show.

He was promoted to co-executive producer in 2020.

Before that Boss starred on MTV's The Wade Robson Project and later came runner-up on Star Search. He also came in second place on So You Think You Can Dance in 2008.

Boss also competed in the All-Stars series and made his debut as a judge this year.

He met his wife Allison when they both competed in the All-Stars series in 2010.

"We shared a dance at the wrap party of that season of So You Think You Can Dance and we have been together ever since," he told People earlier this year.

Allison said: "There was no dialogue, there was no conversation or a first hangout. Literally, we danced and we were together holding hands the very next day. And we never looked back."

Boss' last social media post was with Allison on Sunday where they performed a choreographed dance in the living room in front of their Christmas tree.

The day before that he posted a moving tribute to his wife on their nine-year wedding anniversary.
