Conference championship game Sunday is off to a tough start for NFL conspiracy theorists.
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Baltimore Ravens, 17-10, in the AFC Championship Game to advance to Super Bowl LVIII, and in the process shut down a popular internet belief connected to the big game's logo history.
A variety of users on X, formerly Twitter, pointed out during the regular season that the past two Super Bowls shared a connection between the colors of the game's logos and the teams which participated. The Super Bowl LVI logo contains yellow (Los Angeles Rams) and orange (Cincinnati Bengals), matching up with the team uniforms. Last year, the Super Bowl LVII logo was green (Philadelphia Eagles) and red (Chiefs).
And it wasn't lost on fans that the emblem for the upcoming Super Bowl Sunday is purple and red, matching up to the colors of the top-seeded Ravens and San Francisco 49ers.
Coincidence? Some, perhaps ridiculously, thought not.

The implication, of course, was that certain NFL fans think the league is scripted. Even New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, no stranger to conspiracies, offered some thoughts on the viral graphic of the logos that gained traction online.
But now the Ravens are eliminated and there's no purple team still alive that can keep the trend up for another year. Football fanatics have already taken notice.

"With the Super Bowl logo color conversation over can we agree to stop saying stupid things from now on?" former NFL defensive end Chris Long said on X, formerly Twitter, just as the Chiefs were about to hoist the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

In similar fashion, Mike Florio, founder of ProFootballTalk, posted, "Well, that's the last time I'll ever trust the colors of the Super Bowl logo," and the official DraftKings X account said "The Super Bowl logo theory is officially dead." Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team simply posted "Officially dead" with an accompanying photo of the infamous logos.
@BostonConnr of the Pat McAfee Show said that the "'Super Bowl Teams determined by the Super Bowl logo colors' conspiracy is dead."
Meanwhile, @EricRayweather said "at least now we don't have to hear how the NFL is rigged cause [of] the Super Bowl anymore." @CDod8 humorously shared a GIF from the Simpsons to represent the conspiracy theorists backing away from their take, while @WrldOfTatum celebrated the "Super Bowl logo curse" being lifted with a Ted Lasso dancing meme.

Going into the 2023 season, the league played into all the "NFL is scripted" takes by releasing the "table read" for the year.
As for the red part of this year's Super Bowl logo, the 49ers can hold onto their end of the conspiracy bargain by beating the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game. The winner will face the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas on Sunday, February 11.
