'T BUNDY' to 'FFAUCI': Over 500 Florida License Plates Rejected in 2021

If you live in Florida and are debating purchasing a vanity license plate with a particular message, you might have to think again.

According to a records request initiated by Tampa Bay 10 News, personalized license plate requests in Florida were aplenty in 2021. It was reported that at year's end, approximately 520 license plate configurations had been rejected by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Florida state law is pretty straightforward, in that the aforementioned highway safety department reviews each resident application for personalized plates as the ultimate arbiter.

An HSMV spokesperson told Tampa Bay 10 News that personalized license plate orders are reviewed for obscene or objectionable material by office staff before reaching the state agency, where another review process occurs.

"The department is authorized to reject requests deemed by it to be objectionable, and the department is further authorized to recall, during a registration period, any issued personalized license plate determined by it to be obscene or otherwise objectionable," the state law reads.

Any applications rejected by the state, in addition to submitted taxes and fees, are returned to applicants within 15 days of the application's receipt.

Also, any personalized license plate can be recalled within a current registration period and will lead to a partial department refund. This can occur if a license plate somehow gets through the state department and is reported by a fellow citizen for potentially being obscene or egregious through a formal complaint process.

Some of the 500-plus license plates rejected in Florida last year included:

  • FFAUCI
  • T BUNDY
  • DZZNUTS
  • CUTABCH
  • BULLSHT
  • BASTARD
  • 6PORN9
  • FUPA
  • IFART
  • LUCKYAF
  • PISSAH
  • SADIST
  • WASSZUP
  • Z0SEX

Another rejected license plate, "A**MANN," may conjure a Seinfeld episode where Cosmo Kramer was accidentally given a similar vanity plate in New York.

Rejected license plates run the gamut, not just in Florida but across the United States.

Nearly 80 license plates were rejected in Connecticut, where some drivers attempted to get custom plates like "MOMMYAF" and "YOUSUCK" through state officials.

Oregon reportedly receives 10,000 custom plate requests annually. The state only allows six letters or numbers on its plates.

"We Google things," said David House, spokesperson for the Oregon DMV, to KOIN 6 News. "We use Urban Dictionary. Slang changes a lot, so we need to make sure that some of the things that are run by our desk don't violate these very basic rules that have been in place for decades."

FOX 8 in Ohio reported that of the state's 827 custom plates rejected in 2021, at least 48 of them had to do with people expressing their not-so-endearing feelings toward President Joe Biden.
