A petition calling for Oxford High School to rename its football stadium after one of its star players who died in Tuesday's shooting, has gained more than 100,000 signatures.

Tate Myre, 16, who was reportedly killed trying to disarm the shooter, was one of four people killed at the school in Michigan. The others were 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, and 17-year-olds Madisyn Baldwin and Justin Shilling, who died from his injuries on Wednesday.

Hours after the shooting, an online petition called for the school to rename its Wildcat Stadium after Myre, who played running back for the Oxford Wildcats football team.

"Tate is not just a hero to his fellow students at Oxford high school but a legend, his act of bravery should be remembered forever and passed down through generations, he put his life in danger to try and help the thousands of other students at Oxford High School," the change.org petition states.

Less than 48 hours since the shooting took place, the petition has gained more than 120,000 signatures.

Despite his young age, Myre was named as captain for the 2021 season and had been scouted by University of Toledo.

In a tweet sent two days before the shooting, Myre thanked the Toleda coaches for inviting him to a football game at the university. In a photo accompanying the message, Myre is seen wearing his Oxford varsity jacket.

"It is very rare, and almost non-existent, to see seniors following the lead of a freshman, but this was certainly the case with Tate," Jordan Ackerman, the athletic director at Oxford from 2017 until the 2021, told The Daily Tribune.

"While Tate will most definitely be remembered for his athletic ability, his legacy will live on because he was such an amazing person who made everyone around him better."

Oxford football coach Zach Line also paid tribute to the 16-year old following his death.

"Tate was and will always be a beaming light for Oxford," Line tweeted. "It's hard to put into words what he meant to me, but he will hold a special place in my heart forever. God reaches down and touches certain people, he was one of those people. I love you FOUR TWO."

Oxford Wildcats have been contacted for comment about the petition.

Prosecutors have confirmed that the 15-year-old suspect in the shooting will be charged as an adult.

Ethan Crumbley is facing charges of one count of terrorism; four counts of first-degree murder; seven counts of assault with intent to murder; and 12 counts of possession of a firearm while committing a felony.

Prosecutors are also considering filing charges against the boy's parents after it was revealed that 9mm Sig Sauer used in the attack had been purchased by the suspect's father four days prior to the shooting.
