A student went viral after footage of her interrupting a Zoom lecture to vent about her breakup without realizing she was unmuted was shared to TikTok.
The video, posted by Delaney or @baconlettucetomatofan, received more than 298,000 views on Thursday and left viewers shocked that the teacher did not just mute her mic and let the student go on for several minutes.
"This was a story time fr," the caption of the video read. "We had no choice but to listen. Girly if u see this sorry we tried to warn u but u made class entertaining for sure!"
Zoom, which currently has more than 300 million daily users, became popular when people all around the world were forced to quarantine and take classes and meetings online.
The popular video conferencing app allows participants to turn their cameras and microphones on and off as they please. While the host of the call can request individuals to turn their cameras on, they do not have the ability to turn the camera off.
However, hosts and co-hosts on Zoom do have the ability to mute individuals in the call as they please. This left many viewers confused as to why the professor, who was the meeting host, did not mute the student, leaving many to think that she wanted to hear the drama.
In the video, a class of more than 15 students was in a Zoom lecture when one student was unmuted and started speaking.
Delaney explained through the on-screen text that the girl was "spilling all the tea" about breaking up with her boyfriend. She also said the girl kept going on about how she drove her car the wrong way down a one-way road.
When the video starts, the student, who was mid-story, can be heard talking about getting pulled over.
"I turned around in that one-way cause that cop was flashing his lights at me," she said as the professor sat back and listened. "Bro I ran a red light and turned into a one-way and he just let me go."
"This has been going on for like 3 minutes and she isn't hearing anyone when we tell her she's off mute," the on-screen text explained.
Delaney explained in the comments section that it seemed like the student never realized she was unmuted and was kept off mute the entire rest of the class.
"She just stopped talking at some point," Delaney said.
Delaney also said that her professor told the student she was welcome to stay after class if she wanted to talk about anything. Delaney added that she wasn't sure her professor knew she had the ability to mute anyone in the meeting.
More than 200 viewers flocked to the comments section of the video.
"The way the teacher could've muted her but chose violence," one user commented.
"That teacher is actually sweet if she was just letting her vent but also funny how we as humans will never get tired of gossip," another wrote.
"The teacher wanted the tea too," one comment read.
Some other users recalled their funny Zoom experiences, with many of the commenters saying they thought their mic was muted.
"Lmaoooo freshman year of college on zoom I had a mini fire and I wasn't on mute. My teacher emailed me during class," one user recalled.
"This happened to me one time but the girl was in a therapy session," another wrote.
