The parents of a teenager who was killed in a road crash involving the wife of a U.S. diplomat have spoken of their relief that the suspect will face charges.

Harry Dunn, 19, died when his motorcycle was in collision with a car outside a Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Northamptonshire, England, on August 27.

Anne Sacoolas, 42, whose husband is thought to be a U.S. intelligence officer, was questioned by police but returned to the U.S. under diplomatic immunity.

The teenager's parents, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn, went to the U.S. to ask President Donald Trump to intervene in the case. During their meeting in the White House, the couple rejected Trump's offer to meet Sacoolas, whom he said was in the next room.

Donations have been continuing to flow into the Justice4Harry campaign via GoFundMe, already raising more than £110,000 ($143,000) by Friday afternoon to help the family in their legal fight.

Britain's Crown Prosecution Service CPS, which got a file on the case at the start of November, has said that immunity did not apply to dependants of consular officials outside of London and Sacoolas would be charged with death by dangerous driving, the BBC reported.

Following the decision, extradition proceedings have begun and will involve Britain's Home Office, which will consider whether to formally issue the request through U.S. diplomatic channels, Daily Mail reported.

Sky News broadcast footage of the couple hugging after they found out about the charges, with Charles saying: "I carried out my promise to one of my kids, the promise that I made that we would get that justice.

"I've managed to fulfil the promise. It means everything. This is it, it's amazing, it's absolutely amazing. Justice. Whatever happens now it doesn't matter, we've got what we wanted."

The Dunn family's spokesman Radd Seiger told Newsweek in a statement: "Today's development is obviously a significant one but above all else will enable them, at long last, to begin the process of grieving for the loss of their beloved son.

"I have witnessed their pain first hand day day in day out for all these weeks yet marvel at their courage, compassion, decency, magnanimity but above all else tenacity in their fight for justice," he added.

Meanwhile, the U.S. state department said, according to Sky News, that the CPS decision to charge Sacoolas is "disappointing, unhelpful and will not bring a resolution closer."
