Is Mamma Mia! getting the trilogy treatment? Despite rumors and ABBA stans begging for another jukebox musical, Amanda Seyfried is skeptical.

Over the weekend, rumors swirled about a third Mamma Mia! film being made after the film's producer Judy Craymer teased the prospect in a June 19 interview with The Daily Mail. "I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog," Craymer admitted. "I think one day there will be another film, because there's meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it."

Craymer also admitted that a stage musical for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the 2018 sequel to the critically acclaimed Mamma Mia! could be a future project as well.

The Twitterverse was overjoyed to hear that a third Mamma Mia! could be in the works.

However, Seyfried, who played Sophie, the daughter of Meryl Streep's Donna, doesn't think that a third film is in the cards. In a June 21 interview with Collider, the Mean Girls actress seemed skeptical that a third film could work, even after a successful sequel to the 2008 film and a passionate cast.

"Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other," she told Collider. "That's what we talked about last time, like did we ever think that we'd end up here again on an Island in Croatia?"

Seyfried also mentioned how the 2018 film compared to the 2008 one. "Well it's a better story, because they had something to grow on. The first story had to match the stage show so they were kind of stuck. With the second story, it could have been anything."

"Having Meryl's [Streep] character die gave us so many good storylines," she continued. "It was kind of a genius idea because you're like, 'No, we don't want to lose her.' But at the same time, look at what you can do, you can go back."

However, she also revealed that she's skeptical there aren't enough ABBA songs to go around. "I wish there was a Mamma Mia! 3, but I'll tell you what – I've said it before and I'll say it again and I hope I'm wrong again – I don't think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie."

Seyfried added: "Because we'd have to use 'Super Trooper' again and we'd have to use 'Mamma Mia' again and have to use them in a different way."

A third Mamma Mia! film has not officially been announced. In the meantime, Mamma Mia! is available to stream on Hulu, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again can be viewed on Hulu and HBO Max.
