Thor 4 is set to come out in July and fans are eager for any spoilers or hints they can get their hands on.
With entire subsections of the internet dedicated to breaking down even the most innocuous-looking Marvel-related social media posts for clues, it's no surprise that people think Chris Hemsworth may have just revealed the film's trailer release date.
Hemsworth's latest Instagram post sees him, director Taika Waititi and co-star Tessa Thompson getting ready for interviews. He captions the post: "Some long lead press for Thor Love And Thunder with these two wonderful humans. A day full of wackiness and hilarity. Get ready folks this films gonna be wild!!" [sic]
It's the content of the image, however, that has fans thinking he's telling them when the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer's coming out. In the image, Waititi is pointing two fingers to the sky, Hemsworth is going with two "devil's horns," while Thompson is doing two peace signs.
Some fans have taken these finger gestures to mean the numbers 11, four and 22. In other words, 11/4/22. In other words, April 11, as written in British English.
Is the Thor 4 Trailer Really Coming Out on April 11?
Let's actually look at the numbers to see when Marvel usually drops trailers for its movies.
Were the Love and Thunder promo to drop on April 11, that would be 88 days before the film comes out. Here's how that compares to other trailer release dates:
- Doctor Strange and the Multi-Verse of Madness: December 22, 2021 on YouTube, December 17 as the post-credit scene of No Way Home (135/130 days)
- Spider-Man: No Way Home: August 23, 2021 (117 days)
- Eternals: May 24, 2021 (165 days)
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: April 19, 2021 (137 days)
- Black Widow: December 3, 2019 (584 days, or 151 days before original release date pre-COVID)
- Avengers: Endgame: December 7, 2018 (140 days)
By these metrics, the Thor 4 trailer is certainly long overdue. And a trailer drop has to be imminent – any longer and the promotion is going to get in the way of that for Doctor Strange 2. So while it seems unlikely that Hemsworth and co. are communicating a secret release date, a trailer drop has to be imminent.
Why has the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer been delayed?
The most likely reason seems to be some late-in-the-day reshoots, which may contain a key scene Marvel wants in the trailer. Usually, when a Marvel film releases its trailer, it has either finished with reshoots (as happened with Eternals) or it was in the process of doing them (as with Doctor Strange 2).
Had the Thor 4 trailer come out on a date that matched the average promotional cycle for an MCU movie, it would have been released at the end of February or beginning of March. At this point, reshoots hadn't yet begun – reportedly, these started on March 18.
So far, there have been no reports of these reshoots wrapping, meaning it's still hard to know for certain when we might expect a trailer.
Thor: Love and Thunder is released on July 8, 2022.
