Tommy Lee has confirmed he was in the midst of a two-week "bender" when he posted a naked image that made him the talk of the internet earlier this month.

The Mötley Crüe rock star posted a full-frontal naked picture of himself which actually broke Instagram's Community Guidelines and was removed. He later found a loophole on Instagram's nudity policy and reposted the same image but as a painting. However, the image has slid by Twitter's censors and remains up on his account there.

Whilst on stage at a recent gig, he provided context to the picture, telling the crowd that during a recent break from performing, he went on a "motherf****** bender."

Lee addressed the crowd in Texas and explained what happened. "Couple weeks ago we had like a two week break off the tour, and I went on a motherf****** bender bro. A bender. I got sideways as f***. Got naked and posted pictures of my d***," he said, in a video of the gig posted to his Twitter account.

Lee's anatomy became the talk of the internet hours after he posted it. It remained posted on Lee's profile for over four hours before being taken down, which prompted a conversation about Instagram's rules as female users pointed out that their risque pictures were removed almost instantly compared to Lee's picture.

The crowd in Texas cheered and Lee laughed after he made his admission.

Continuing his crowd work, he encouraged all of the men in the crowd to "pull your junk out" instead of having women flash him. The video ends with Lee calling on one audience member to do it.

Lee's Twitter fans seem to have taken the advice seriously as the comments thread featured men exposing their penises.

After Lee had the picture showing his penis removed from Instagram, he reshared the same picture but in painted form. The artist behind the updated version was Ziva Barrett, the wife of Rob Barrett of the Cannibal Corpse metal band.

She also shared the image on her Instagram account and explained how the collaboration came about. "When Tommy Lee 'hands' you a d*** pic, you don't ask questions, you grab a (big) canvas instead and get to work," she wrote on her account @mercyfulflake.

Barrett reposted the same picture a few days later to clarify the authenticity of her work. "Since it keeps getting assumed my painting is just a digital filter on @tommylee's pic' here is the painting in my art room on the easel. That should be enough proof it's legit."

Newsweek has reached out to Lee for further comment.
