A transgender student was physically assaulted by a fellow student in an incident that was caught on camera, prompting calls for change at the Pennsylvania school where it happened.

Willow Andring, 14, suffered a concussion after a male student attacked her at Armstrong High School on October 27, KDKA-TV reported.

The male student began verbally abusing her at lunch before physically assaulting her that same day, she told the station.

"He pulled me from behind and started beating me up," Andring said. "And before this, he had been calling me names saying, 'It's not a she, it's not a he, it's an it.'"

Andring's mother, Heather Andring, told the station that her daughter has been called names before, but they "never thought this would happen."

The attack on Willow Andring was filmed by another student, according to the station.

Her mother is demanding tougher consequences for the student who attacked her, as well as widespread change at the school.

On Monday, Heather Andring and other concerned parents asked the school district to take tougher action against the student who perpetrated the attack and called for widespread change at the school.

Armstrong students were recently banned from hockey games after students chanted derogatory comments at the female goalie of an opposing team, according to WTAE.

"We are listening and we are certainly willing to work with the community and the administration to do whatever it takes to be proactive and not reactive to this problem and promote change," the board said during the meeting, KDKA-TV reported.

Manor Township Police are investigating the incident at Armstrong High School, but no charges have been filed, according to the station.

Newsweek has contacted Heather Andring, the Armstrong School District and Manor Township Police for further comment.

It comes days after a lawsuit was filed against an Indiana school district after staff members denied two transgender students the use of bathrooms and restrooms aligning with their associated gender identity.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit against the Vigo County School Corporation on behalf of the students, requesting a preliminary injunction ensuring that staff at Terre Haute North High School use the preferred male names of the students.

Meanwhile, the ACLU and LGBTQ civil rights advocacy group Lambda Legal have filed a lawsuit challenging a Tennessee law that bans transgender students in high schools or middle schools from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity.
