Travis, Jason Kelce Settle the Debate: Is 'Die Hard' a Christmas Movie?

Travis Kelce and his brother Jason think it's perfectly acceptable to watch Die Hard around Christmas.

That said, the Kansas City Chiefs' star tight end and the Philadelphia Eagles' star center seem to agree on whether Die Hard is specifically a Christmas movie.

On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, the brothers discussed the well-worn debate about Bruce Willis' 1988 action classic.

"We've got to just knock Die Hard out," Travis said. "It's not a Christmas movie. I'm sorry."

Jason agreed, noting that Die Hard is a much more versatile movie that could be enjoyed in the summer just as well as Christmas (unlike, for example, The Grinch or Elf).

"I wouldn't say it's a Christmas movie because you can watch it at any time of the year," Jason said. "It's not strictly a Christmastime movie to watch. Die Hard is acceptable to watch anytime."

That said, Jason added that he hasn't seen Die Hard in a while.

"Just picture Bruce Willis walking out of an exploding building with like explosions just going off and he's just like barely alive," Travis said. "That's the whole movie. ... He kills it, I'm kidding. But they did make five of them of him doing that exact thing."

For what it's worth, even the people involved are split on whether Die Hard counts. Screenwriter Stephen E. de Souza tweeted in 2017 that it counts "because the studio rejected the Purim draft," referencing the Jewish holiday that typically falls in March.

Willis, however, made waves in 2018 when he declared, with some emphasis, that "Die Hard is not a Christmas movie."

As for their favorites, Travis said the classic A Christmas Story gives him "the feels."

"It's filmed in Cleveland, Tower City," Travis said. "As a kid, I remember going down that slide. I remember going into the mall area. On top of that, just the scene of the outside reminds me of a Cleveland Christmassy, snowy Christmas."

Travis added that he loves funny Christmas movies like Elf and Four Christmases.

"I'm a comedy guy," he said. "I don't like not-funny Christmas movies."

Jason approved of Travis' choices.

"Dude, I love both of those movies," Jason said. "I'd probably put Elf above Four Christmases but I'm such a Vince Vaughn guy I'll watch Four Christmases any day of the week."

Whichever movies the brothers opt to watch, they will need to either save their movie viewing for Christmas Eve or later in the evening on Christmas itself. Travis and the Chiefs play the Las Vegas Raiders at 1 p.m., while Jason and the Eagles take on the New York Giants at 4:30 p.m.
