A semitrailer carrying 2,200 piglets crashed near Xenia, Ohio, late Monday night, setting free hundreds of pigs.

Between 300 and 400 pigs were killed in the accident, and one person, the driver's fiancée who was a passenger in the truck, was injured.

Highway U.S. 35 was closed for eight hours as local authorities, farmers and some neighbors worked to round up the pigs. About 1,500 piglets were captured and taken to nearby fairgrounds.

Though so many were captured, hundreds still remain free. Many of the pigs ran into the woods on the side of the highway.

"Probably, we'll never get a hold of them…. We'll try as hard as we can, but we probably won't retrieve them all. I can't say what will happen to the pigs," Xenia Township Fire Chief Dean Fox told the Dayton Daily News. "If somebody finds a pig and wants to turn it in, call the local law enforcement, and we'll try to take care of it."
